Nolan Arenado has been on the trade block this winter, with the St. Louis Cardinals making their intent to move the eight-time All-Star clear during December’s MLB Winter Meetings. Among the suitors, the Boston Red Sox have emerged as the leading candidate.
“Multiple league sources indicate the Red Sox represent Arenado’s last chance to get dealt before the 2025 season,” reported Katie Woo of The Athletic. She noted that if Boston fails to sign Alex Bregman, they could pivot toward trading for Arenado.
The Red Sox defense in 2024 struggled mightily, ranking 29th in fielding percentage, 29th in errors, and allowing 95 unearned runs. Rafael Devers, the team’s third baseman, posted a -5 Outs Above Average (OAA) for the fifth time in his eight-year career. A move to designated hitter for Devers seems inevitable, and the addition of Arenado would expedite that transition.
Even at age 34, Arenado remains an elite defender. He won his 10th consecutive Gold Glove in 2022 and has ranked in the 75th and 86th percentiles for Fielding Run Value over the past two seasons. His defensive prowess would represent a significant upgrade for Boston.
However, fitting Arenado onto the Red Sox roster isn’t without challenges. Masataka Yoshida currently occupies the DH role, and with $54 million remaining on his contract over the next three years, Boston would likely need to move him before bringing in Arenado.
While the trade makes sense for the Red Sox—addressing their defensive shortcomings and adding a right-handed bat—the logistical hurdles could explain the delay. Despite these challenges, Boston remains the frontrunner for Arenado and is reportedly his best chance at being dealt before the 2025 season.
