The New York Giants may once again be changing their offensive play-caller. In 2022, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka handled playcalling duties, leading the team to a playoff appearance and their first postseason win in over a decade. However, in 2023, the offense struggled significantly, leading head coach Brian Daboll to take away Kafka’s responsibilities, temporarily handing them to quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney before assuming the role himself. By the end of the season, Kafka appeared to regain control. In 2024, Daboll was the sole play-caller, but the offense struggled again, finishing 31st in scoring.
Now, as the team prepares for the 2025 season, they are evaluating their options for playcalling duties. Kafka is a strong candidate to reclaim the role—if he remains with the team. He is currently a finalist for the New Orleans Saints’ head coaching job.
Giants Could Lose OC Mike Kafka to the Saints
With former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy withdrawing from consideration, Kafka is one of three remaining candidates for the Saints’ head coaching position, alongside Eagles OC Kellen Moore and Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver. Moore is viewed as the favorite but could opt to stay in Philadelphia, potentially making Kafka the frontrunner.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen acknowledged Kafka’s potential departure, expressing his hope that he remains with the team while also praising his qualifications. Kafka was a finalist for multiple head coaching jobs last offseason but ultimately stayed in New York after being promoted to assistant head coach. If he leaves, the Giants’ offensive structure could undergo a major shakeup.
Who Will Call Plays If Kafka Leaves?
Following the 2024 season, Daboll and Giants ownership discussed the possibility of relinquishing playcalling duties. If Kafka departs, Daboll may choose to continue calling plays himself. However, if he decides to step away from those responsibilities, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney is a likely candidate to take over.
Tierney has been with the Giants since 2022 and previously worked under Daboll with the Buffalo Bills and at Alabama. Given their long-standing relationship, Daboll may trust him to lead the offense. If Kafka moves on, the Giants will need to decide whether to hand the reins to Tierney or have Daboll retain control.
