The Boston Red Sox appear to be making progress toward acquiring one of their key offseason targets.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals have recently discussed a potential trade involving eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Boston has been linked to Arenado for some time, and talks seem to be heating up.
Cardinals president Chaim Bloom, who previously worked in the Red Sox organization from 2019 to 2023, is familiar with Boston’s farm system. This connection could play a role in trade negotiations, as Bloom may be interested in reuniting with some of the prospects he helped develop.
Arenado, 33, has seen a dip in performance since finishing third in NL MVP voting in 2022. Last season, he posted a .272 batting average with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs over 152 games, along with a .719 OPS—his lowest since his rookie year.
Acquiring Arenado could trigger other moves this offseason. The Red Sox have also been linked to free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. If Boston lands Arenado, it would likely increase the chances of Bregman re-signing with the Houston Astros.
Bringing in either Arenado or Bregman might force All-Star Rafael Devers to shift to first base or designated hitter. However, Devers’ recent cryptic social media posts have left questions about his willingness to change positions.
