The New York Yankees are exploring trade options for top prospect, with a potential deal involving a National League team.
Dylan Sanders of SI.com proposed a trade in which the Yankees would send Stroman to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for pitching prospect Cade Kuehler.
In this proposed one-for-one swap, New York would receive Kuehler, Atlanta’s 10th-ranked prospect, who was selected in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft. The 22-year-old right-hander reached High-A in 2024, posting a 3-6 record with a 3.74 ERA over 12 starts between Single-A and High-A. Adding Kuehler would bolster the Yankees’ farm system, potentially serving as a future trade asset.
Meanwhile, Atlanta would acquire Stroman, who is entering the final year of his two-year, $37 million contract with the Yankees. The veteran right-hander, a two-time All-Star, finished the 2024 season with a 10-9 record and a 4.31 ERA in 30 appearances (29 starts). He would likely slot in as a fourth or fifth starter in the Braves’ rotation.
Sanders believes acquiring Kuehler would be a solid return for New York, given Stroman’s current trade value. He notes that while the Yankees already have a surplus of right-handed pitching prospects, Kuehler still represents a quality asset. However, a key motivation for New York in such a trade would be shedding Stroman’s contract.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman acknowledged that Stroman’s name has come up in trade discussions and did not rule out a move before spring training. Speaking to YES Network, Cashman stated, “We’ll see how it plays out,” while also defending Stroman’s performance, saying the team’s defense let him down in 2024.
Yankees pitchers are set to report to spring training on February 11.
