The extension was primarily triggered by Ohio State’s attempt to lure Durkin away, as reported by Rivals’ Brian Stultz. However, CBS Sports’ Hugh Freeze suggests a more skeptical reasoning: Auburn may be bracing for struggles on offense under Freeze.
Salerno notes that while there is optimism heading into Freeze’s third season—especially with Jackson Arnold joining from Oklahoma—Freeze has yet to produce a winning season, and the offense has underperformed. If those issues persist, Durkin’s defense may once again shoulder the burden as Auburn pursues SEC and playoff success.
For Durkin, this scenario might actually work in his favor. If Freeze falters and loses support from fans and donors, Durkin could emerge as a natural interim head coach. Depending on when a potential coaching change occurs, he might even get an extended audition for the role.
More realistically, given athletic director John Cohen’s public support for Freeze, Auburn is hoping for a strong 2025 season, which could also make Durkin a target for other programs. With experience in both the SEC and Big Ten, he would be a desirable candidate without commanding the highest salary on the market.
Auburn is paying Durkin as if he’s a long-term piece, but coaching turnover has been a defining characteristic of Auburn football in the 21st century.
