The Red Sox briefly considered starting the season with a six-man rotation, but that idea is no longer in play.
Boston is currently missing one of its most dependable pitchers in Fort Myers, Fla.
According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed Saturday that Kutter Crawford’s availability for Opening Day is uncertain. Crawford has been dealing with a knee issue that originated during his offseason training, putting him behind schedule in his throwing program.
The 28-year-old was seen as a potential sixth starter, especially after the team added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, creating a crowded rotation. With Banner Houck,Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito already locked into spots, Crawford was likely to serve as either an additional starter or a bullpen option.
However, that question appears to be settled—Boston’s main focus is getting him healthy.
Meanwhile, Bello has been managing a minor injury but is still expected to be ready for the regular season. As for Zach Penrod, he will be sidelined for a while, though surgery is not currently being considered, according to Cora.
