After previously failing to sign the veteran southpaw, Boston secured Moore on a minor-league deal last week. The 35-year-old struggled with the Los Angeles Angels last season, leaving his chances of making the Red Sox’s final roster dependent on his spring performance.

While some fans were surprised by the team’s decision to sign Moore despite his rough 2024 campaign, manager Alex Cora recently provided a clear explanation for the move.

“Just another experienced guy competing for a spot,” Cora said. “Physically, he looks great—just like Adam (Ottavino). It’s good to have another veteran presence. These guys have been through the grind and know what it takes.”

“Given where we are as a team, experience matters.”

The Red Sox have been open about their need to strengthen their bullpen. Boston’s relievers struggled last season, posting the seventh-worst bullpen ERA in MLB (4.39). As a result, the team added Moore, Ottavino, and oldis Chapman

With 13 seasons in the Majors, Moore also brings leadership to the clubhouse. Amid issues like the Rafael Devers controversy and Triston Casas drama, another experienced voice could be valuable.

Still, it remains to be seen if Moore can help improve Boston’s bullpen. The former All-Star struggled with the Angels last season, posting a 5.03 ERA and 1.345 WHIP while allowing 2.0 home runs and 4.8 walks per nine innings.

However, considering the Angels’ struggles in 2024, joining a competitive Red Sox squad might help Moore regain his form.
