Several teams faced disappointment at the conclusion of the 2024 college football season, particularly those that fell short of winning the national championship. Among them were the Georgia Bulldogs.
Despite claiming their second SEC Championship in three years, Georgia, the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff, was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 23-10 loss to Notre Dame.
During an appearance on Always College Football, Paul Finebaum spoke with Greg McElroy about Georgia’s performance. Finebaum believed the Bulldogs regressed and did not meet expectations.
“I don’t feel great because I do think they took a dip,” Finebaum stated. “Just as we once expected Nick Saban to always be in the national championship conversation, it’s becoming the same with Georgia. And when they don’t make it, it feels like a disappointment. I felt like they underperformed.”
Although Finebaum still sees Georgia as a playoff contender, he no longer considers them a top national title threat. He also noted the Bulldogs’ significant player losses to the transfer portal—more than 15 departures, including star quarterback Carson Beck. While not currently concerned, he suggested that doubts would grow if Georgia struggles in the playoffs next season. Ultimately, head coach Kirby Smart will have the opportunity to reshape Finebaum’s perception of the team’s trajectory.
