Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal has a clear vision for the future—he sees former UM quarterback Cam Ward as the top pick in April’s NFL Draft. “Ward deserves to go first overall because he’s the most competitive and complete player in the country,” Cristobal told reporters ahead of Ward’s trip to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine. “His drive, his influence on those around him—he’s in a league of his own.”

The talented Texas-born gunslinger transferred to Miami from Washington State last January, instantly reshaping the program. His arrival reignited excitement for the Hurricanes in South Florida. “He’s transformed our University’s profile and elevated everyone around him,” Cristobal said. “I believe he has the ability to uplift an entire franchise, just as he did here. He’s one of the most special players I’ve ever been around.”

Ward shares his former coach’s confidence. Speaking in Indianapolis, he declared himself the best player in the draft, emphasizing that his game film speaks for itself.

“The tape backs up everything I believe,” Ward said. “I’m just being honest. What sets me apart is my mindset and the way I approach every game.”

Once a zero-star recruit in high school, Ward climbed his way to becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist. But he’s not satisfied yet—he knows there’s still more to achieve.

“I mean, not many people can take the path I’ve taken,” Ward said. “I think it proves how much effort I’m willing to put in, whether I’m drafted in the first round or the second. In the end, the draft position doesn’t matter—it’s all about making a name for yourself once you get the chance.”
