The Indianapolis Colts believed they had found their franchise quarterback when they selected Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. However, he has yet to prove he can fulfill that role.
Following a somewhat disappointing 2024 season, the Colts appear poised to explore a new quarterback option. Additionally, they don’t seem too concerned about the possibility of Richardson being replaced.
Through his first 15 career games, Richardson has completed just 50.6% of his passes, totaling 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He has also contributed 635 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
With that in mind, a new projection suggests Indianapolis could make a significant offseason move to bring in a replacement for Richardson.
Indianapolis Colts Projected to Make Huge Move to Replace Anthony Richardson in 2025
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic has shared his prediction for the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback situation, projecting that they will sign Sam Darnold as their new starter.
“Ballard, somehow, is getting another shot at finding a quality starting quarterback. Darnold is the top free agent available after an impressive 2024 season: 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions,” Rosenblatt wrote.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Darnold is expected to command a contract exceeding $40 million per year. If the Colts make this move, they would be banking on him maintaining his high level of play despite struggles in the regular-season finale and wild-card playoff loss.
Adding Darnold would be a major acquisition for Indianapolis, potentially positioning them as serious AFC contenders in 2025.
During the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings, Darnold played in all 17 games, completing 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
At just 27 years old, set to turn 28 before the 2025 season, Darnold could provide the Colts with a long-term solution at quarterback. He might be the key to turning the franchise around.
Expect Indianapolis to pursue a move of this magnitude. Whether they target Darnold or another option like Justin Fields, the Colts will likely seek to upgrade the position and at least create serious competition for Anthony Richardson.
