The Minnesota Vikings’ primary offensive struggle last season stemmed from a weak interior offensive line. Recognizing this issue well before free agency began on March 10, head coach Kevin O’Connell acknowledged the need to strengthen the unit.
“The Vikings are expected to sign center Ryan Kelly, a team source confirmed Monday evening. Kelly, who turns 32 in May, becomes the first of what could be multiple additions to the interior of the offensive line this offseason,” Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported.
This move raises questions about the future of current center Garrett Bradbury, who is entering the final year of his contract. The Vikings could free up over $3.5 million in salary cap space by trading or releasing him before June.
Bradbury, the 18th overall pick in 2019, has spent all six seasons of his career with Minnesota, starting all 88 games he has played. Meanwhile, Kelly, a nine-year veteran, has spent his entire career with the Colts, earning his most recent Pro Bowl selection in 2023 and a Second-Team All-Pro honor in 2020.
Minnesota is still in the market for an offensive guard, and Lewis suggested that Kelly’s arrival could help the Vikings land another key addition. “[Kelly’s] presence might also intrigue fellow free agent and former teammate Will Fries, whom the Vikings have also been interested in,” Lewis wrote.
