The New York Mets have been actively revamping their starting rotation this offseason. President of baseball operations David Stearns has secured multi-year deals with Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, and Clay Holmes, while also signing Griffin Canning to a one-year contract. However, speculation continues about a potential trade for Minnesota Twins ace Pablo López.
Despite the new additions, the Mets’ rotation still has question marks. Montas, who missed nearly all of 2023 due to injury, recorded a 4.84 ERA over 150 2/3 innings in 2024. Holmes, a two-time All-Star in the past three seasons, has been primarily a relief pitcher since 2019. Acquiring López could solidify the rotation, forming a formidable trio with Manaea and Kodai Senga. While López posted a 4.08 ERA across 185 1/3 innings in 2024, his performance between 2021 and 2023 was more consistent, with a 3.57 ERA over 476 2/3 innings.

A potential trade proposed by Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer suggests the Mets could acquire López and catcher Christian Vázquez in exchange for left-handed pitcher David Peterson, shortstop Jett Williams, and outfielder Drew Gilbert. Williams and Gilbert rank as the Mets’ second- and third-best prospects, per MLB.com, but including Peterson and absorbing Vázquez’s contract might allow the Mets to keep their top prospect, right-hander Brandon Sproat.
López, under a four-year, $73.5 million contract, isn’t set to become a free agent until after the 2027 season, earning $21.75 million annually from 2025 to 2027.
