With Corbin Burnes no longer in the fold, the Baltimore Orioles are exploring ways to bolster their starting rotation. As top free-agent pitchers are off the market, the team is turning its focus to the trade market and has reportedly begun discussions involving an All-Star arm.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Orioles are engaged in trade talks with the Seattle Mariners regarding Luis Castillo. However, Morosi noted that the negotiations are still in the early stages, with “several hurdles” yet to be overcome before a deal can be finalized.
One potential obstacle is Castillo’s full no-trade clause, which could complicate any agreement. Despite this, the Orioles remain interested in the Mariners’ ace as they look to strengthen their pitching staff for the upcoming season.
While Castillo is not on Burnes’ level, he would still be an improvement to Baltimore’s current starting rotation. The three-time All-Star pitcher has a 3.43 ERA in three seasons with the Mariners. However, with a pitching surplus, the Mariners can probably afford to part ways with Castillo as they attempt to enhance the rest of their team.
Castillo is owed $72.5 million over the next three years, plus a $25 million team option in 2028 for reaching 180 innings in 2027.
