LSU will once again be in search of a new defensive line coach as Bo Davis is departing to join the New Orleans Saints. Davis, who was LSU’s seventh defensive line coach since 2020, leaves the Tigers needing to hire their eighth coach for the position in just five years.
Luke Johnson reported, “The #Saints are expected to hire Bo Davis as their defensive line coach, according to a league source, adding another coach from the college ranks. Davis most recently coached the DL at LSU and is regarded as one of the NCAA’s top defensive line coaches.”
It’s uncommon for a program to cycle through so many coaches at one position in such a short period, but LSU has faced this challenge repeatedly. Defensive line coaches often transition quickly, as many are younger and advancing in their careers, whether through promotions, lateral moves to other schools, or jumps to the NFL.
Davis has been coaching since 1995, starting as a graduate assistant at LSU. His career has taken him through various stops, including North Shore High School, the Miami Dolphins, Alabama, Texas, the Jacksonville Jaguars, UTSA, and the Detroit Lions.
Now, he adds the Saints to his résumé. This marks his third stint with LSU, having previously been a graduate assistant for three seasons and later an assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2002 to 2006. His most recent tenure in Baton Rouge lasted just one season in 2024.
With extensive experience as a defensive line coach—holding that role at seven of his last nine coaching stops—Davis brings a wealth of knowledge to New Orleans. He has coached at the high school, college, and professional levels, giving him a diverse background in the game.
As for LSU, the Tigers must once again find a replacement. Fortunately, they’re no strangers to filling this role. For head coach Brian Kelly, it’s just another task to tackle in what is shaping up to be a crucial offseason.
