The first day of the combine delivered intriguing results for Aggies fans and NFL enthusiasts alike. Due to injury, Shemar Turner was unable to take part in the drills, leaving Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart and Nic Scourton as the only representatives on the field. Heading into the event, both Stewart and Scourton were projected as potential first-round picks in most mock drafts, including the latest Athlon mock draft, which you can check out here.
Shemar Stewart
Stewart put on an impressive display at the combine. Officially measuring in at 6’5″ and 267 pounds, he still managed to run an unofficial 4.59-second 40-yard dash—good for fourth among all defensive ends. His athleticism didn’t stop there; he recorded a 40-inch vertical jump, the second-best among defensive ends, trailing only Arkansas’ Landon Jackson, and posted a 10-foot-11-inch broad jump, which led all defensive ends at the event.
Perhaps the most intriguing takeaway from his performance was the striking resemblance to Myles Garrett—the 2016 No. 1 overall pick, perennial All-Pro, and former Aggie. With this standout showing, Stewart has likely propelled himself into the top 10 of the draft, and it’s not far-fetched to consider him as the second edge rusher selected. Previously projected to go No. 15 overall to the Atlanta Falcons in our latest mock draft, Stewart’s stock is now on the rise.
Nic Scourton
Scourton is regarded as one of the top defensive ends in this draft class, and he opted to participate only in positional drills at the combine. As a result, he chose not to run the 40-yard dash or take part in the more traditional combine tests. However, his decision to slim down from 285 pounds to 257 was evident in his performance—he showcased impressive speed, agility, and fluid movement throughout the drills.
His athleticism and quick bend stood out, reinforcing his status as a likely first-round selection. Currently projected to go No. 28 to the Detroit Lions in mock drafts, Scourton still has more opportunities ahead to further solidify his draft stock. With additional drills on the horizon, both Aggies are looking to maintain their Round 1 status and continue climbing draft boards.
