The All-Star first baseman is still looking for a home.
He options for finding a team have dwindled over the offseason. Teams that required a first baseman, like the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals, New York Yankees, and Cleveland Guardians, made signings or deals to fill the position.
As a result, it seems highly likely that Alonso will remain in Queens and re-sign with the New York Mets. Drafted by the Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Alonso has developed into one of the league’s most formidable power hitters.
Over six seasons with the Mets, he has earned four All-Star selections, smashed 226 home runs, posted an .854 OPS, and achieved a 134 OPS+ (indicating he was 34% above the league-average hitter). He also claimed the National League Rookie of the Year title in 2019.
However, despite his impressive track record, teams have been hesitant to commit to a long-term deal with a 30-year-old first baseman whose performance has declined over the past three seasons and who provides limited defensive value.
