The Boston Red Sox’s biggest offseason acquisition may end up being short-lived. When they traded for Garrett Crochet, the expectation was that they could secure the young left-hander with a long-term contract. While the team retains control over Crochet for the next two seasons, they likely made the move with an eye on the future—especially considering they gave up one of their top prospects in the deal. However, Boston’s window to extend him appears to be closing.
Speaking with Alex Speier of The Boston Globe over the weekend, Crochet indicated he has a firm deadline for contract discussions. “For me personally, once the season starts, I would like for whatever conversations are currently being had to be placed on the back burner until the following offseason,” he said.
In the meantime, Crochet is already showing Red Sox fans what he can bring to the rotation. Over six-plus innings this Spring, the towering lefty has struck out 14 batters without allowing a run. With free-agent signing Walker Buehler also impressing in camp, there is plenty of optimism at Fenway.
