The Boston Red Sox are expected to be playoff contenders in 2025 and they could use another late-inning reliever.

MLB analyst Zach Pressnell of FanSided proposed a deal that would see the Red Sox acquiring Robert Suarez from the San Diego Padres in a four-player blockbuster.

  • The proposed trade would be a major move for Boston, as it would bring Suarez—who has the potential to serve as the team’s closer—in exchange for three prospects.

    Suarez inked a five-year, $46 million contract with the Padres, including an opt-out clause after the 2025 season that he’s expected to use. In 2024, he posted a 9-3 record with a 2.77 ERA over 65 games and converted 36 out of 42 save opportunities, making him a strong contender for the Red Sox’s closer role.

    In return, Boston would trade Cespedes, a 19-year-old middle infield prospect ranked seventh in their organization. He excelled in rookie ball in 2024, batting .319 with 5 home runs and 24 RBIs.

    The final piece would be Dobbins, a right-handed pitcher ranked 13th among Boston’s prospects. Drafted in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB draft, Dobbins advanced to AAA in 2024, recording an 8-5 record with a 3.08 ERA over 25 starts.
