The Chicago Cubs made another roster adjustment Tuesday, trading infielder to the Seattle Mariners.
The infielder, who had been designated for assignment following the Cubs’ acquisition of reliever Matt Festa from the Texas Rangers, will now join the Mariners to compete for a roster spot. In return, the Cubs will receive cash considerations, as noted in MLB’s transaction wire.
During the 2024 season, Mastrobuoni served as a utility infielder for the Cubs, recording four RBIs and nine runs scored in 106 plate appearances. He posted a slash line of .194/.245/.224 in what was his third season with the team.
This trade is part of the Cubs’ broader efforts to retool their roster, with their infield taking shape as spring training approaches. The team recently acquired Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers in the Rule 5 Draft, adding another third base option after trading Isaac Paredes to the Houston Astros for outfielder Kyle Tucker.
Additionally, the Cubs plan to give top prospect Matt Shaw an extended opportunity at third base in 2025, aiming to boost offensive production from the position. They also brought in utility infielder Vidal Bruján from the Miami Marlins in exchange for Matt Mervis, providing a versatile replacement for Mastrobuoni in their infield depth chart.
