The Philadelphia Phillies have signed, a three-time Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) All-Star and Olympic gold medalist, as a non-roster invitee to spring training. Aoyagi, 31, spent nine seasons with the Hanshin Tigers, where he showcased his versatility as both a starter and reliever. His notable achievements include All-Star selections in 2019, 2021, and 2022, a pivotal Game 7 start in the Tigers’ 2023 Japan Series victory, and winning gold with Samurai Japan at the 2020 Olympics.
Historic Signing
Aoyagi is the first player in Phillies history to be signed directly out of Japan and could become only the third Japanese player to appear in a game for the franchise, joining Tadahito Iguchi and So Taguchi, who both played in 2008.
Role and Fit with the Phillies
The Phillies’ rotation is solidified with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sánchez, Ranger Suárez, and Jesús Luzardo. However, Aoyagi’s ability to fill multiple roles makes him an intriguing candidate for the bullpen, where one spot remains open. As a ground-ball specialist with a sidearm delivery and a fastball averaging in the low 90s, Aoyagi could serve as a swingman, providing depth and flexibility for the pitching staff.

Path to the Majors
Aoyagi was posted by the Hanshin Tigers on December 5, giving MLB teams a 45-day window to negotiate with him. If he makes the Phillies’ major league roster, the team will pay the Tigers a posting fee equal to 20% of his guaranteed salary.
Having split time between the majors and minors in 2024 and posting a respectable 3.69 ERA in the big leagues, Aoyagi will have the opportunity to prove himself at BayCare Ballpark this spring. If successful, his signing could be a notable step forward for the Phillies in expanding their international presence.
