According to Baseball Savant, Santander excelled with a barrel percentage in the 79th percentile and a hard-hit rate of 41.6%. Additionally, the NL Central, with its favorable home run ballpark factor, could amplify his offensive production.
Defensively, Santander brings a strong arm but lacks elite range and positioning, which the Cubs would need to address. Alternatively, Santander could slot in as a designated hitter, where his offensive contributions would shine. This move could also allow the Cubs to consider trading Seiya Suzuki for additional assets or roster flexibility.
Santander’s projected five-year, $88 million contract, with an average annual value of $17.7 million, aligns with the Cubs’ budget. Adding him would not only bring much-needed power to the lineup but also make the team more competitive in the division.
