Alabama football will retain one of its veteran linebackers, thanks to a court ruling influenced by Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. Justin Jefferson announced on Saturday that he will return for another season with the Crimson Tide after a ruling allowed junior college players to gain an additional year of eligibility. Pavia had filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, leading to a temporary injunction, and as the case continues, the NCAA decided to grant waivers for athletes who played at non-NCAA schools, allowing them to compete in 2025-26. Jefferson, who previously played at Pearl River Community College, is one of the players benefiting from this decision.
Originally, Jefferson’s eligibility was set to expire after this season, but he can now play another year. In his Instagram post, Jefferson expressed gratitude, thanking God, his family, friends, teammates, Coach Saban, and Coach DeBoer for their support. He also acknowledged those who fought for junior college athletes’ extra year of eligibility, which has allowed him to continue playing at Alabama, a place he holds dear.
Jefferson joins Tim Keenan III and LT Overton as defensive players who will return for another season. This season, Jefferson contributed 61 tackles, one pass breakup, two sacks, and one forced fumble while rotating at inside linebacker behind Jihaad Campbell and Deontae Lawson. Campbell declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, leaving an opening at inside linebacker for next season. Lawson has not yet announced his plans, but he could return. Additionally, Alabama added Colorado linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green through the transfer portal.
