Walker Buehler’s transition to the Boston Red Sox marks a significant shift in his career after spending seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The former 24th overall pick, who initially wore No. 64 in Dodger Blue in 2017 before switching to No. 21, has opted for the distinctive No. 0 in Boston. While No. 21 remains unofficially tied to Red Sox legend Roger Clemens, Buehler’s choice aligns him with the exclusive group of Red Sox players to wear the number, including Brandon Phillips and Adam Ottavino.
Buehler reflected on his decision during a recent Zoom call, saying, “21 was taken, or somewhat taken… I don’t know, it felt kind of fitting. We battled a lot on double zero or single zero. But I think the smaller number looks a little skinnier out there, so I went with the single zero.”
Comeback Journey
Buehler’s journey back to form has been eventful. After missing the entire 2023 season following his second Tommy John surgery, his 2024 campaign started unevenly but ended on a high note. Though he struggled in the regular season (1-6, 5.38 ERA), his postseason performance was stellar. He bounced back from a tough NLDS outing to pitch 10 scoreless innings over his final three appearances, helping the Dodgers secure a World Series title.
Memorable 2018 World Series Debut
Buehler also reminisced about his World Series debut in Game 3 of the 2018 Fall Classic against the Red Sox. Facing a dominant Boston lineup, the then-rookie delivered seven scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. The game, which extended into 18 innings, ended with a Dodgers victory on Max Muncy’s walk-off home run. Despite his stellar performance, Buehler never got the chance to pitch at Fenway Park that year.
Looking Ahead to Boston
Buehler’s 2025 debut at Fenway Park will be his first time pitching in the iconic ballpark. He expressed his excitement, saying, “It was pretty electric when we played there in the World Series… Having not pitched there, I’m looking forward to it certainly.” He also acknowledged the importance of delivering strong performances for his new team, adding, “It all kind of starts with me throwing the ball well.”
